The Nautical Magazine collection

Nautical Magazine

Nautical Magazine, February 1984.

The Nautical Magazine was first published by Simpkin, Marshall, and Co., London, in March 1832 as The Nautical magazine and naval chronicle: a journal of papers on subjects connected with maritime affairs, the first editor being Captain (later Admiral) A. B. Becher. After Volume 59 (1890), under the modified title of Nautical magazine and journal of the Royal Naval Reserve monthly publication was continued by Brown, Son and Ferguson, Glasgow, eventually assuming ISSN 0028-1336. On December 31st 2011 the Magazine was bought by Seabreezes Publications, Isle of Man.

The magazine covers many aspects of both the Merchant and Royal Navy, with numerous features from outside the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1832 to cover news and developments in both naval and mercantile matters, with perhaps a bias towards the merchant service, with a regular monthly look at A Nautical Miscellany, International News, and an excellent book review section together with articles, letters and brief news snippets.

The Nautical Magazine is only rarely illustrated. Sometimes compared with Sea Breezes and Ships Monthly, this is a journal for the professional seafarer.

The cover of the February 1984 Issue is illustrated.
